In this video tutorial I am going to show you how I used one of the adorable chickens from Stampin' Up!'s February Hey Chick and Hey Birthday Chick Bundle promotion.
Birthday Card Featuring a Chicken holding a balloon created using Stampin' Up!'s Birthday Chick Bundle

I don’t know what it is about chickens, but I have always loved them!

If the city where I live allowed homeowners to have chickens in residential areas, I would build a little coop in my backyard in a heartbeat!

I remember one day, hubby and I went for a little drive in the country. It’s one of the things that we love to do on weekends in the summer. We never know where we are going, we just start driving. Seeing what we can see.

You wouldn’t believe the number of little treasures we’ve stumbled on!

On this particular day, we came across a beautiful little farmhouse, surrounded by a white picket fence. Enclosed in the picket fence area was an apple orchard. And there, underneath the trees were dozens of brown hens. They were just meandering among the trees, pecking on the ground.

The sight of that made me SO happy.

I don’t remember where that house was, and we’ve never driven by it again. But still to this day, whenever I think of it, I can’t help but smile.

Which is why, when Stampin’ Up! released thethe Hey Birthday Chick and Hey Chick bundles – I snatched them up! These two bundles are a part of a promotion that Stampin’ Up! has going on.

Starting this month, Stampin’ Up! is offering two fantastic coordinating bundles filled with adorable chickens!

The Hey Chick Stamp Set (a 2017 Sale-A-Bration set) has returned and brought along three new friends: The Chick Dies and a brand-new bundle that includes the Hey Birthday Chick Stamp Set and the Birthday Chick Dies.

These playful images are so fun to stamp. You’ll love sending the “punny “cards you make to all your friends. These bundles are available until June 30, 2021.

The Hey Birthday Chick stamp set is brand new set just released in the January to June 2021 mini catalogue.

It has four adorable chickens, each celebrating in a different way. Along with four different greetings to choose from. Two of them standard greetings, and two of the them “punny” greetings.

The chicken on the bottom left – with the balloon attached to it’s tail, is the one that I used for today’s card.

Stampin' Up!'s Birthday Chick diesWhat I love about the coordinating die set, is that it doesn’t just include the dies to cut out the chickens, but it includes a whole bunch of different “accessories” as well.

There is a little picket fence, a grain bag, and a banner, along with a few other dies.

There is also a “Happy Birthday” greeting that you can die cut if you decide you would prefer to die cut over stamping.

Stampin’ Up! Canada | Hey Chick Stamp Set

image of Stampin' Up! Canada's Hey Chick stamp setThe Hey Chick stamp set was originally released as a Sale-a-bration stamp set back in 2017.

As you can see, it has the same characters as in the Birthday Chick stamp set, but in more neutral poses.

So really, you could use these images for any type of card.

As you can see it also has three greetings that are a little more “general.”

Stampin’ Up! Canada | Chick Dies

Stampin' Up! Canada's Chick diesWhat is new is the die set that Stampin’ Up! released to coordinate with the Hey Chick stamp set.

And like the Birthday Chick dies, it also includes a bunch of different dies that you can use to build scenes on your card. It has a wire fence, a chicken coop, and corn, among other things.

For my card, I used the wire fence die to create a backdrop for my chicken.

Here you can see a close up of the card I created.

It’s a more “clean and simple” style, but with lots of added texture and visual interest.

For the backdrop I die cut the wire “fence” die out of white cardstock and then layered it onto a white cardstock panel. The effect is subtle because of the white on white, but it really serves to step up the card.

The chicken is of course the “star of the show.” Rather than color him in “traditional chicken colors,” I decided to colors her in a rainbow of colors. And I have to say….I love it!

The last little detail I want to draw your attention to is the “hay” that the chicken is leaning on. I’m not sure what the die was actually intended for – it kind of looks like chicken footprints. However when I die cut it, it reminded me of hay scattered on the ground, so that is what I used it for.

So now let’s get into the details of the card…

Stampin’ Up! Canada | Let’s Celebrate You Dimensions

  • Basic White Thick CS: a 4 ¼” x 11″ piece
  • Basic White CS: a 4″ x 5 ¼” piece and a scrap piece
  • Basic Black CS: a scrap piece
  • Daffodil Delight CS: a scrap piece

Stampin’ Up! Canada | Let’s Celebrate You Instructions

Step 1: Score the 4 ¼” x 11″ piece of Basic White Thick cardstock at 5 ½” and then fold it in half with your bone folder to create your card base.

Step 2: Stamp the chicken onto a scrap piece of Basic White cardstock using Memento Tuxedo Black ink.

Step 3: Color in the chicken using Stampin’ Blends. For the balloon, I used Light and Dark Daffodil Delight and Dark Mango Melody. For the chicken, I used Dark Pool Party, Light Bermuda Bay, Light and Dark Granny Apple Green, Light and Dark Daffodil Delight, Dark Mango Melody and Light and Dark Pumpkin Pie.

Step 4: Die cut the chicken using the Birthday Chick dies and a die cutting machine.

Step 5: Stick a piece of adhesive sheet on the back of a scrap piece of Basic White cardstock. Die-cut the chicken wire three times from the cardstock using the Chick dies and a die cutting machine.

Step 6: Rub an embossing powder tool over a scrap piece of Basic Black cardstock. Stamp the greeting onto the cardstock using Whisper White Craft ink. Sprinkle white embossing powder over the greeting. Tap off the excess embossing powder. Heat this with a heat tool until the embossing powder has melted.

Step 7: Trim the greeting into three small greeting strips using a paper trimmer.

Step 8: Place the “hay” die onto a scrap piece of Daffodil Delight cardstock and run it through a die-cutting machine. You will notice that the die simply makes cut marks in the cardstock and you should be able to see the impression from the perimeter of the die. Cut along the impression from the die using paper snips. Repeat to get a second piece of hay.

Step 9: Brush some color onto the bottom of each of the pieces of hay using a Light Daffodil Delight Stampin’ Blend marker.

Step 10: Remove the backing from the die-cut chicken wire pieces and stick them onto the 4″ x 5 ¼” piece of Basic White cardstock.

Step 11: Stick the two pieces of hay onto the Basic White cardstock panel, so that the left piece is about 2″ in from the left edge, and the right piece is aligned with the right edge of the cardstock panel, using double-sided adhesive.

Step 12: Stick the chicken onto the Basic White cardstock panel using Stampin’ Dimensionals.

Step 13: Stick the greeting strips onto the Basic White cardstock panel using Tear & Tape adhesive.

Step 14: Center and stick the Basic White cardstock panel onto the card base using Stampin’ Dimensionals.

Step 15: Embellish the card using some rhinestone basic jewels. You’re done!
